London Olympic Stadium – Transformation project “The Halo”

Summary: New structural and architectural canopy structure around Olympic Stadium
Specification: 1150 tonnes of primary structural steel framework to support the new ‘Halo’ ETFE roof and new BRE Certified SR2 rated glazed security doors and screens – surrounding the 2012 Olympic Stadium forming its entrance foyer and gate structure.
Challenges of the task: The challenge of this project its geometry with all steels set at differing angles both on plan and in the sections themselves making the ‘node’ junctions complicated by having to be fully sealed and aesthetically pleasing to the architects team Populous.
It was fitted with an ETFE ‘bubble’ roof which held challenges to accommodate all the airlines that feed the ‘bubble’ roof.
This project took a four person team 6 months to complete with fabrication drawings totalling over 16,000 drawings.
