Location: Farringdon, London

Summary: Cantilevered Feature Staircase, Glass Balustrade & Support Steelwork.

Specification: Mild steel Staircase & support Steelwork – all steelwork primed & visible steelwork painted Snapchat Yellow RAL1018. Toughened & Laminated Glass Balustrade with Stainless handrails painted Bronze Anolok.

Challenges of the task:

• Heavy duty cantilevered half landings:
  – Due to differential movement between the existing slabs, the short return flights could only be pinned at the base. This meant that the half landings and flights has to be suppported from the steelwork frame behind the feature wall.

• No visible fixings:

– Due to the client requirements, visible fixings were to be kept to a minimum. As a result, the fabricated Glass track Stringers were all bolted together using CSK fixings into tapped holes which were positioned out of sight. Any unavoidbale visible fixings were to be over Countersunk and painted for a discreet finish.

• Sequenced installation:

– The installation sequence determined which connection style could be used between each assembly. For example, once all of the support steelwork was installed, the outside staircase Stringers had to be installed, followed by the internal clamping Stringers which received the Treads & Landing plates.
